About Mr. Cartwright!

Hello students and families!

I'm Mr. Cartwright, your Mathematics Department Chair and teacher for Integrated Math, College Algebra, Precalculus, and Calculus.

Before finding my calling in education, I held many jobs and careers, including firefighting and culinary arts. Throughout my many different roles, I have consistently used mathematics--sometimes without realizing it. When I was a manager at Applebee's, I created an Excel spreadsheet using algebra to automatically calculate supply needs based on current inventory counts. As a firefighter, I performed rapid mental calculations to determine water pressure loss as hoses climbed multiple stories--a critical safety skill.

Despite the wonderful opportunities and experience I gained in my many career paths, I have discovered the joy and wonder of helping others understand and gain confidence in mathematics. Whether you're graphing functions or finding the area under a curve, I'm here to support your mathematical journey and help you succeed.

I know that learning requires pushing yourself to the edge of your abilities, where mistakes naturally happen. Research has shown that our brains are the most active and learn the most when we try new and hard things. When you try something hard in my classroom, you are invited to make mistakes because that shows me you are stretching your abilities beyond what you can currently do. When that happens, you are making your brain stronger and developing new skills that you did not have before. I believe every student can excel in math with the right mindset and encouragement, so I invite you to embrace challenges, ask questions, and make this your most successful year in mathematics!
