As the new principal at Bayfield High School, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone back for the 2021-2022 school year. I have met with the dedicated teachers and staff of BHS many times over the past several weeks and I can tell you that we are all anxiously awaiting having students back in our classrooms and hallways filling them with energy and enthusiasm. While none of us had anticipated all of the changes that were seen in the past two school years, this year we are looking forward to returning to a “normal” 5-day school week, as well as seeing a return of the Wolverine Way that includes traditions such as Homecoming week, full athletic schedules, concerts, art shows, and other events that make Bayfield so special. In addition to this return of events, I also have a few important updates and reminders to share with you.
First, the administrative team, counseling team, and office staff have returned to the office as of August 9th. The office is open from 7:45 am - 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday, so please feel free to call if you have any questions or concerns.
Second, at our first home volleyball game on Tuesday, August 24, the new administration and counseling teams will host a Meet and Greet with the BHS community. We are excited to have the opportunity to meet many of you and cheer on the Wolverines in the first home event of the 2021-2022 school-year.
Third, please utilize the BHS website, especially the calendar portion of the website where you can find all of the upcoming events and activities. You can also find each edition of the Wolverine Press, which is sent out every Friday during the school year, in the middle of the page on our website. We will also be utilizing our social media platforms more frequently than in previous years. More information regarding these platforms will be in the upcoming editions of the Wolverine Press.
In addition to focusing on teaching and learning, resilience, the ability to rebound from a setback, is a focus area for the entire school this year. Resilience is a competency that is fundamental to one’s success and can be developed, just as writing, singing, or playing a sport or a musical instrument. Resilience is an area that students will hear about throughout the year as we, the staff, have a professional obligation to our students to help them prepare for a world that is increasingly complex and ever-changing. In keeping with this commitment to building resilience in our students, I encourage each of you to ponder this quote by Nelson Mandela that we will refer to throughout the year. “I never lose. I either win or learn.”
Finally, as I stated in the opening of this letter, we are looking forward to welcoming all of our students to the 2021-2022 school year. The first day of school for freshmen is Monday, August 23rd. The first day for the entire student body is Tuesday, August 24th.
