Bayfield School District is expanding educational opportunities for students and families with the launch of a comprehensive online learning program for grades 5–12, designed to provide flexibility, personalization, and strong connections to the local school community.

The new program offers a fully online and hybrid learning option led by licensed Colorado teachers, giving students access to daily academic support while allowing them to learn in an environment that best fits their individual needs.

“This is about providing students with a program that works for them,” said Bayfield High School Principal Jason Wayman. “We are going to keep it personalized for the benefit of our families.”

The initiative comes in response to changing educational needs and a desire on the part of district leaders to meet those needs for families in LaPlata County. By offering a high-quality, locally connected option, Bayfield School District aims to better serve students while strengthening its overall programming.

“We’re trying to be as robust and comprehensive for our community as possible,” Wayman said. “We are telling families that they're part of our community and we want their kids to learn here.”

“Bayfield School District is small, but we have hard-working students who are chasing big dreams. This is another way we can expand on the opportunities available to put those students on a path towards a successful future," Superintendent Dylan Connell noted. "I am incredibly proud of our team's willingness and ability to create flexible learning models that are high-quality and match student interests.”

Meeting Students Where They Are

The online program is designed to support a wide range of learners, including students with demanding extracurricular schedules, those balancing work responsibilities, homeschool families, and students who benefit from a more flexible or individualized learning environment.

Key features of the program include:

  • Licensed teachers for every course with daily support
  • Higher staffing ratios than many regional online programs
  • Access to counseling services and academic planning
  • Special education support, including dedicated staff to meet IEP requirements
  • District-provided technology and technical support
  • Opportunities for concurrent enrollment through Fort Lewis College, Western Colorado University, Adams State University, and Pueblo Community College
  • Eligibility to earn a Bayfield High School diploma and participate in graduation ceremonies
  • Opportunities to participate in athletics, clubs and other extracurricular activities

Students will also have access to a wide range of courses, including core academics, electives, and unique independent study options such as entrepreneurship, digital media production, outdoor leadership, and career exploration.

A Personalized, Community-Focused Approach

Bayfield’s online program reflects the district’s commitment to combining small-school relationships with innovative learning opportunities.

“We want to meet our families where they are at in this new era of education,” Wayman said. “We’re not afraid of change — we’re excited to learn and grow with our students and families.”

The program also aligns with the district’s strategic focus on career-connected and project-based learning, expanding opportunities for students to pursue individualized pathways while staying connected to their community.

By leveraging technology and maintaining strong educator support, Bayfield School District aims to offer the kind of comprehensive educational experience typically found in larger districts—while preserving the personalized attention that defines its schools.
