Bayfield High School students, staff, and community members came together on Monday, December 8, for the Wolverine Blood Drive, an event that brought life-saving impact to people across the region. Ahead of the event, donors were encouraged to drink plenty of water, eat a good meal, and bring a school or state ID. Students ages 16 and 17 were reminded to bring a signed parental consent form in order to participate.
The blood drive, held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the BHS gymnasium, was co-hosted by the National Honor Society (NHS) and Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) and coordinated by BHS Librarian Tara Henderson.
Vitalant, the regional blood services provider based in Farmington, partnered with the school to collect donations. According to Henderson, 37 available donation slots were filled—a strong turnout that included a mix of students, teachers, and local community members.
“This was truly a school and community effort,” Henderson said. “We’re grateful to everyone who took the time to donate.”
Student Leaders Kept the Drive Running Smoothly
A team of student volunteers—acting as “runners” throughout the day—helped ensure the drive operated efficiently between class periods. Their responsibilities included checking in donors, assisting Vitalant staff, and helping guide participants through the process. Runners included Mia Willie, Anna Hesford, Lucy Hubbert, Vivienne Clance, Madison Kurtz, Gulianna Seidell, Kaiya Morris, Ryan Kurtz, Samantha Elk, and Lauren Tarkington. Their support, along with the careful planning by NHS, HOSA, and Henderson, created a positive and well-organized experience for donors.
Vitalant will return for another blood drive in the spring, with the date to be announced later. For more information about donating blood, visit vitalant.org or call 877-258-4825.
