Bayfield and Durango High Schools Host First Unified Basketball Showcase

The Showcase, which highlights the spirit of inclusion and teamwork, will feature the boys’ basketball teams from both schools, as well as their Unified Basketball teams, and will take place at the Durango High School Main Gym, according to a press release authored by BHS student Rachel Nava, a Unified partner at the school

The Unified Basketball game will tip off that event at 3:45 p.m., followed by the C-Team slated for 4:10 p.m. The Junior Varsity (5:30 p.m.), and Varsity (7:00 p.m.) matchups will wrap up the evening’s entertainment.

According to the press release, the Unified Basketball teams, consisting of athletes from both schools, have been preparing for months to demonstrate their skills in front of their peers. The event underscores the power of inclusion, providing an opportunity for students and athletes of all abilities to come together, play the game, and celebrate the values of unity and sportsmanship.

“I am excited for the unified basketball team to show what they’ve been learning in class and to have a great time,” said Damon White Thunder, Bayfield’s head boys’ basketball coach. “I love helping teach these kids how to play basketball, and it feels good to know I have the opportunity to be a mentor to these students.”

The event is the culmination of a partnership that includes the BHS Unified Physical Education program, Unified Athletes, DHS Unified Athletes and both the BHS and DHS boys' basketball teams. The effort highlights the dedication of students, coaches, and mentors alike to create a welcoming and empowering environment for all involved.

“This class is a very eye-opening experience,” said Jordyn Lott, a BHS Unified Partner student. “It allows you to create friendships that never would have happened. It means just as much to the mentors as it does to the athletes, and these are friendships and lessons that we will carry for the rest of our lives.”

Tickets cost $7 for adults, and $5 for students, military and senior citizens. Children under 7 can attend for free, and DHS students are allowed entry for $1 with their student ID. Tickets can be pre-purchased at https://primoticketingadmin.com/client/durango-high-school or at the gate, which will open at 3:30 p.m. The games will be available for viewing on NFHS Network and HUDL TV for those unable to attend in person.
