This annual art show is a competition between the six southwest Colorado high schools that make up our league — Alamosa, Bayfield, Centauri, Cortez, Monte Vista, and Pagosa — and each of those schools takes turns hosting the event on a rotating basis.
Approximately 600 pieces of art were displayed in the show, which was open to the public from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., and awarded top artists for their entries in numerous different categories.
Artists created and were judged on three different types of painting, ceramics, mixed media, computer art, and photography, in addition to countless other artistic disciplines.
“We were privileged to have three nationally renowned judges judging the show; Diane West of Diane West Gallery Jewelry and Art in Durango, Barbara Klemia who formerly taught art at Fort Lewis College, and Kasey Correia with Dancing Spirit in Ignacio,” said Bayfield High School art teacher Kathleen Neal.
A big day for BHS was made even more significant when Bayfield artists were chosen for three of the five top awards in addition to claiming top spots in many of the competition categories.
Ivy Hinkle's acrylic painting was chosen for Best of Show, Martina Wagman's oil painting was chosen for Judges Choice 2D Advanced, and Tauer Crotty's ceramic and metal sculpture was chosen for Judges Choice Advanced 3D art.
