Superintendent Coronavirus Update March 19, 2020

Dear Bayfield Families and Staff,

Official Bayfield School District Communication for Thursday, March 19. By the Governor’s executive order at 6 P.M. yesterday, all in-person learning in private and public schools is now closed through at least Friday, April 17. Please continue to enjoy your family and your spring break this week. Next week, we will begin an education continuation plan for all Bayfield students. Please know that we are working to ensure your student is connected to learning and to school, as we cannot offer robust online learning at this time.

The Colorado Department of Education and the Governor have been clear they will grant waivers for this crisis on the minimum required classroom hours (we have over two weeks of extra time built into our calendar), but we must develop a plan to continue the education of our young people.

To implement our plan, our education continuation plan at grade K-2 will be mostly packets and activities available through a web site and emails from the teacher or available by pickup on Thursday evenings from 3-6 PM. Our education continuation plan at grades 3-12 will utilize either Google Classroom or Schoology, with emails to and from the teacher. We also have asked teachers to establish two virtual/online office hours per day, beginning Thursday, March 26, to respond to emails and questions. Some teachers may also utilize Google Hangouts for video conferences, as well.

The plan highlights include:

• Our goal is for every teacher to reach out to all students on Wednesday, March 25, mostly through email and technology.
• We will provide an emphasis on core content of reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies.
• Educational items will start to appear in Schoology, Google Classroom, or online web sites in phase 1 on Wednesday, March 25.
• Phase 2 will begin on Monday, March 30, with more classes and content online in Schoology and Google Classroom (especially secondary grades 6-12)
• We plan to have paper learning packets for K-2 students on Thursday, 2/26 in the BPS Hug and Go. Look for more information from Principal Amanda Holden for process and timing.
• Learning packets from grades 3-5 available at the lunchtime pickup at Bayfield Intermediate School beginning on Thursday, March 26, from 11-Noon, for those without internet access.
• Google Classroom and Schoology will work on Xbox and Playstation web browsers, or any internet-enabled computer or device.
• If a teacher has not made contact with you or your student by the end of the day on Wednesday, March 25, please email the principal of your school. Please do not call the school as no one is in the office to answer phone calls.
• If your 3rd-12th grade student needs a district Chromebook, or other materials from BHS distribution will be 4-6 PM on Wednesday, March 25 and Thursday, March 26, at BHS, BMS, and BIS.

To ensure a safe and efficient process for checking out Chromebooks, please do the following:
Arrive at your child’s school parking lot on either Wednesday, March 25 or Thursday, March 26, between 4 PM and 6 PM (look for more distribution information from your school/principal).
• Write your child’s name and grade on a piece of paper in large letters, so it can be seen through the car window (at least six feet away).
• Chromebook identification numbers will be recorded and the device/charger will be handed to you through the window.
• Complete required Bayfield School District Chromebook agreement form available here.
• Please remain in the automobile.
• If you have children attending more than one school, pick up devices at each school.
• Chromebooks will be collected from students in grade 3-5, when school resumes.
• If you are unable to pick up a device on March 26, please arrange to send someone in your place.
I know this time has been hard on everyone in Bayfield and across our nation. Please know, however, that I am so proud to be serving as your Superintendent. Furthermore, the leadership team of principals and directors is committed to continuing the education of each student, each day.

Warmly,
--kevin
